Cinnamon Bear - Restaurant Review

If you're craving something delicious, made fresh, and with fresh ingredients at anytime of the day then this is the place for you. Granted its in Virginia, but it's still a worthy pit stop whether you're passing through or in the town to stay-this is a place to frequent!

First off, the owner and chef has a refreshingly humble personality with the patience and conscientiousness of your diet needs. They don't necessarily advertise or publicize that they provide gluten free options, healthy substitutes, and have lactose free options for some of their menu items so if it's your first time trying this quaint little hole in the wall, then make sure to ask.

Second, I don't I can do him (the owner) justice on how conscientious he is of the gluten free items and diet. Lets just say that he has family affected by both the gluten intolerance and celiac disease...so if you're a little timid or cautious in trying their food this should help ease some of that concern, a concern that he's more attentive to than most other restaurants you'll frequent or go to (especially in the Virginia state).

Third, they did once upon a time have a reward program at their kiosk, that you would enter in your telephone number and the account/profile would be found. Why do I say "once upon a time", well because it's been a while since I've been personally and NO for any of you nay sayers or negative people it's not because I don't like it or that I'm not standing behind me review of their quality of establishment and food. Just personal circumstances-let's leave it at that ;)

Lastly, I haven't even expanded on their actual menu items specifically but know that at this restaurant you don't want to leave without having tried one of their freshly in house made pastries/desserts. And yes for those of you who may be wanting to ask, they even have gluten free dessert options!

I know I was always excited to try something new or even if I ate my "norm" selection; in case you're wondering, my favorite all time menu items were their gluten free lemon bar, muffins (both blueberry and chocolate chip), their breakfast wrap, their breakfast sandwich but as a wrap instead of a sandwich, tuna AND chicken salad, turkey avocado wrap, Italian chicken breast, with the last of my favs being their pear and gorgonzola salad!

My mouth has literally just watered as I'm typing and reminiscing on their menu items I would eat...as I've said before, don't just take my word for it, go take your palette on an adventure and try it out for yourself!

Sincerely,

A Distinct Woman

J Petal - Restaurant Review

If you're traveling north and going through JMU university city (aka Harrisonburg, Virginia) then you need to put this on the stop for you!

(This is not my image but used after googling “J-Petal”. My pictures from being here are on the blog's instagram page "truthbetoldlifeblog".)

What seems to be a simple family owned restaurant with your typical rolled up ice cream flare that's taking America by storm everywhere, is definitely more than meets the eye! You see we've come to know the owners and their family, who is about 98% of the staff - well it was once upon a time they may have changed that recently but I'm not sure, but regardless that's not the focus of this post. As I was saying, with coming to know the owners well you get to see firsthand how they run their business as well as seeing the quality of what they put into not only their business but their products. Not only are they delicious but the options are unique! The options are not overbearing for someone who is indecisive and yet there is just enough options for someone who comes in craving one thing but contemplating another. Ok before I confuse you with what I'm trying to get at, let me break it down.

This wonderful place started off with their marketing and go to being the rolled up ice cream, then they ventured into not only the delicious ice cream and toppings but the crepe side of deliciousness! So when cold season rears it's pretty chilly weather, this place has people covered with not only sweet crepes but a twist on seafood and even breakfast style and flavor crepes! Oh but they didn't stop there! By early spring of 2019 we noticed that they were reconfiguring their kitchen area towards the far back area of their entrance meanwhile they had added some delicious drinks to their menu. Granted if they served it with liquor it would've been even more of a delicious surprise, but thankfully their flavors and mixed drinks of flavors and fresh fruits didn't even need the additional boost of liquor. Their mixed drinks were of milkshakes and mixed teas then into some fizzed drinks, etc. All leading into the best thing that could happen to someone, especially someone who loves food as much as I do! They finished their in-house kitchen reconfiguration to surprise all with the poke bowls! I know it may seem that it's a lot for an establishment to do, to become such a versatile one stop shop for a variety of deliciousness, but that's exactly what they did and I was thrilled to see their success when it happened-I'm hoping it continues that way for them!

The quality of their raw fishes and fresh ingredients never disappointed, their portions/serving sizes were perfect for whatever you're appetite, their lunch specials were becoming legend, AND to top if off inside the environment was so relaxed and chill that it fast becomes your go to spot everyday...from their comfy lounge like open area of couches with tables to the games they provided to those who stayed a while, and warm family that owned it.

Believe me when I say I wish more of the these locations were this delicious and consistent on their deliciousness while also serving quality with spoonfuls of flavor!

Heritage Bakery & Cafe - Restaurant Review

So the weather was beautiful and warranted a walk around the downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia area where my family and I happened to fall upon a little quaint location. After lots of walking from a downtown festival that was going on, the sun was beginning to pinch the skin to the point of having the urge to go indoors for a while. Considering that we were wanting to be out and about, we opted for the longer walk to our vehicles, when we spotted this cute little entrance to a bakery and some aesthetically pleasing outdoor decorations and setup. We were already contemplating what we would be doing or had a hankering for dinner, so I suggested for us to go inside this cafe and see what they had, the decision was made pretty quickly too since two family members in attendance had to use the restroom-thank you mother and my oldest daughter!

Inside was another wave of such a charming feel. The kitchen was nowhere as big as you might think and the staff was so friendly, it made you feel as if you had just entered into a long lost friend's house. In the charm appeal of a rustic country family farm on the inside, there was some history about the location and restaurant, so while you wait for your food to be ready you could easily peruse around the first floor of the building to soak up some history and some interesting facts. Their menu isn't large by any means and I must admit that the food wasn't as mouth watering delicious as I had anticipated (definitely didn't have a light in comparison to my other favorite place downtown, Lola Mo's) however, is think its because the whole environment and fresh ingredients as well as the calm and charming feel of the establishment inside while you ate...well why wouldn't you want to waste time there and eat while window watching the rest of the world.  They do also offer minimal (to nothing) of some dessert but that wasn't out of this world either, by any means. Still there was something just captivating about the spot, that we took a little bit of a while to leave.

So as much as I would like to give them a five-star, unfortunately for me, I would have to rate them at about a 3.5 from 5. Now if only they amped up their food tastes and items...also if you should ask the reason for that rating was more because of the environment and the calming feel the entire establishment had. Either way, it's good food and I'm sure you would enjoy it as well.

Lola Mo's Delicatessen - Restaurant Review

Whether you're passing through Harrisonburg, Virginia this is a must visit place to eat at in downtown Harrisonburg. Not just for the quaint feeling of downtown itself but for this great deli with your not typical tasting deli sandwiches! Their prices are a little more than your Jersey Mikes, Jimmy Johns, and other sandwich chain establishments but let me tell you that the price you pay for one of their sandwiches is worth EVERY bite! If you're craving something fresh and delicious this is the place for you, if you're craving something like a hot toasted sandwich then this is the place to pit stop at, if you're needing authentic and homemade ingredients incorporated into your sandwich (and we're not talking about just the sauces they may use) then this is a place for you.

Being a gluten free individual myself, you know it's hard to find the places to be able to cater to your dietary needs and I'm happy to say that this restaurant continued to receive a five-star recommend feel every time I eat here! My daughters already aren't your typical children in society but even with their expansive palette they love any and all sandwiches from here. So if you asked me if kids would eat well here, I personally can say yes they will!

So the next time you're possibly going to a JMU game, or perhaps moving into town, or just passing through on your travels and not wanting the norm pitstops then I highly recommend this for you! Don't take my word for it though! Stop by and help this restaurant continue on (even after everything that happened with COVID in this town) because they are worth it! Let me know what you think!

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center - Family Life/General

If you're looking for a place to enjoy the outdoors, stay inside your vehicle, and yet make it a fun filled day Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is the place for you! Granted when I went it was warmer weather but there's plenty to do on foot at the main entrance building facility and there's so many animals to see on the route throughout the wildlife trail. It's a very nice experience for any age group and it's beautiful sights on the drive there (if you don't live in the Fort Worth area) and the drive back home.

If you have been to this location I truly recommend it and encourage it! It's a great idea for field trips whether you're homeschooled or not. Don't take my word for it though, go yourself and let me know what your experience was like!

Baby Weight Post-Pregnancy - Health

For those of you who don't know, I used to have another blog so if this looks familiar to any of my readers, I am the original author so yes the original post was on my previous blog. This revised post is why I'm re-posting it to this blog. I hope you enjoy!

"The greatest gift you can give your family and the world, is a healthy you."

-Joyce Meyer-
There really is no way to fully prepare for the changes that a female endures on her body when she's pregnant, even the post pregnancy physique. When I took all the pictures you see below, they are leading up to a six month post-pregnancy timeframe (for my first daughter)...it took a very committed and dedicated six months for me to loose all the baby weight that was developed for the pregnancy. It didn't help that my body was forced to take some extensive medicine during delivery and the first post week after delivery, but I managed to shed the baby weight none the less.

Top Left: This was the December/January after my daughter's birth, with the specific size of clothing and wearing clothing that would assist in covering the c-section hormonal belly bulge that typically comes to light after having your baby. As I look at these images I still remember so vividly how conscientious I was becoming of the bulged stomach. I know what you may be thinking, how could someone who seems so confident in her writing and who holds high self-esteem for herself be so conscientious of her figure?!? First off for those of you who don't know or especially who have never gone through a pregnancy and post-delivery, please hold you tongue in check because you can't possibly understand. So the answer is yes, at that time I was. Before you go being judgmental or critiquing me, I wasn't being conciscentious for vain reasons, I mean shoot if I had the ability to spend as much money and time on my self and training/working out to secure I went back to my size 8/10 curvy latin boy pre-baby (or babies now), I don't think this post would even be in existence.

I do believe there are a few different reasons how or why this tummy bulge sticks around. I will say I'm not one for excuses about your own health and well being, if you have a goal in mind for your physical and mental well being than make it a priority otherwise you're just making excuses as to why you aren't getting there. The reason for my conscientiousness of wanting to lose the baby weight had nothing to do about insecurity towards my husband (well at that time since he's an ex-husband now), I wasn't trying to lose the weight so that I could remain attractive to him. I'm sorry but that's the dumbest reason why I think a woman should persevere-pregnancy and childbirth are natural and women are made for such a miraculous and monumental experience but it comes with the "scars" after, almost as if it were a battle scar. I didn't care what anyone else was telling me like certain family members who were pushing for me to be back to a certain size and I didn't care what the public saw when they see me in public (never have and I still don't). The main reason why I decided to persevere was because my "mommy brain mode" kicked in. I was extremely healthy before my pregnancy (thanks to my mother's encouragement and my father's hard working in my education) and I knew I wanted to be as healthy as I could be for my daughter; I feel that how healthy I was pre-pregnancy was a valuable and blessed contribution to how my daughter was born strong, healthy and whole regardless of the stressful pregnancy we endured She came out of me taking away all the nourishment and "good juices" from my body. Feeling and working in all aspects before my oldest came along, was the goal, so that no matter the physical demands and the possible tough/tougher times that would be endured I would manage just fine. It just so happen that if you're also a smaller size you can shop for cheaper clothing :p Why maternity clothing and larger clothing is so expensive...is beyond me. I understand that more fabric and material is used, but at the rate of obesity in this country you would think that the clothing for the thinner people would be a few dollars more instead. Anyhow, I digress from that squirrel tangent....

Top Right: The January/February picture was taken during the time where I wasn't as concerned about wearing clothing to cover up my mid section, tummy bulge, and "love handles"...no I was just resorting back to some of my maternity shirts and dresses to feel comfortable, confidant, and have clothing fit me a little more loose. Ok let's face it, some maternity clothes are so darn comfy that why wouldn't you still wear it even after the baby is born!?! The Capri in this pic were definitely still my maternity Capri.

Middle Left: These two pictures were early March, where I was literally starting to feel able to push myself physically through the workouts. Not 100% pre-pregnancy fit but a very good percentage of that healthiness feeling. It's hard to explain but hopefully you can relate to that which I can't really put into words. Sometimes it has nothing to do with inches or weight-loss and its all about that"feeling". Do you know what I mean? It's the feeling of inner power, strength, and agility. That even if you didn't sleep well your body is ready to take on that extra few hours of labor/work/exertion. No? Maybe just me?...Anyway! I had that great feeling that I was wanting to wear more shorts and I felt the ligaments/muscles at work inside my body. It's hard to explain how to be so in tune with your body, when many others out there aren't in tune or can't comprehend the phrase "in tune with your body." Some just make fun of that statement, claiming its some stupid notion or just a means of paying for a yoga/pilates class. Moving on then.

Bottom: The two bottom pictures with the tank top, are taken for this sixth month post-delivery timeframe, exactly! Feeling great and regardless of what people have said or think, I like how I look as well! Working with no more than 10lb weights in routine patterns with some free weight circuits in addition to eating well (the same way I did before the pregnancy) I feel like my old self again completely! I'm at 189.2lbs instead of the 210.6lbs on my release from the hospital in October of 2016.

Of course that's not my ideal weight so its a continued progress of getting leaner and loving it! Working out for me serves as also a stress reliever so for those struggling to get rid of your baby weight, let's find something that you love to do that will provide you that boost of energy but calorie burn to lose the baby weight the right way without worrying about it's ugly return because you have a downtime in the mix of your weight-loss. It's to get me back where I was health/physically but it was also my biggest stress reliever. When things are difficult in the real world, running and being outside provides me my distraction, but pushing my body harder and longer is what takes away my anger, stress, and frustrations of life

When weather permitted back then I would strive to get home from work early enough to have ample time in taking my daughter on a long walk in her stroller while I got my workout on, sometimes with my dogs as well, the wonderful dogs I had at the time (and that would be three at that time by the way). Other work days I worked out during my lunch hour at work, in the gym provided by the building. Either way since then I've always kept in my mind to complete the 10,000 steps! During that time the Apple Watches weren't out yet so yes I had a Fitbit to keep that count. I do strongly suggest for someone to get a calorie tracking app that has the ability of collaboration and integration of a steps tracking tool because it will assist someone in getting themselves into a healthy regimen or routine so that they can either 100% be dependent on or that they use to get accustomed to the healthy life changes you're trying to integrate. I continually remember what my doctor and surgeon told me, "it takes up to ten months for your body to prepare in creating and having a child, so keep that in mind when you are getting impatient or frustrated at not losing all of the baby weight yet. It takes time to heal and sometimes longer if you had a cesarean, like you did. It might take a full year before you actually see physical improvements." As many can attest to, it's always easier said than done, but for something like this I know what I'm telling and can openly tell you because I've gone through it twice now!

Don't panic and don't stress, because this will be an example of slow and steady will win the race. Besides you want to lose the weight so that you don't add it back on in a brief moment of laziness, life circumstance/s, or worse case scenarios. Time truly is on our side momma's don't get discouraged and loose faith in yourself! So new momma's or women trying to lose the baby weight. Make a goal and stick to it - even if others laugh or critique it. It's working for me and I'm not dieting NOR am I skipping meals. I'm a person with a budget, busy life (sometimes on less than four hours a night of sleep), child, family, friends, and long driving time to and from work; if I can make it happen other women out there have no excuse. Stay strong and you got this. Also, just remind yourself that we are all works in progress not only spiritually but physically, so you won't be perfect therefore the beauty will lie in the imperfections and in all your hard work to get to your end result. A fact that remains for me to this day, I'm always still working on the reduction of the baby weight fat (especially since it was accumulated all over again on the second pregnancy I had with my ex-husband).

I think one of the older tradition methods of the woman being on house arrest for up to forty-five days post-delivery has dwindled or lost it's "prestige" or perhaps it's no longer a necessity that women demand any longer, since everyone is about work schedules and getting all you can for your buck...I get it all however its this old tradition in some latin and even European cultures that practice this forty-five day house arrest. I know it's sounds amazing to some (who are homebodies) but for the rest of you, that's not the case. How you spend your recovery post delivery will depend on your doctor and the advice/suggestions they provide. Although, this home arrest serves for various benefits I'll only name the top five benefits: 1)you get some of the best bonding time with your baby during this house arrest 2)if you didn't do the old school pregnancy techniques before the birth then you can definitely use this time to create a solid schedule for your baby and their habits. Save yourself the future stress 3)if you had a natural birth than these forty-five days will provide an easier physical transition of nourishing what your body needs to produce breast milk and in turn rid that baby weight fast! The results will be shocking. If you had a c-section birth than these forty-five days spent in house arrest will allow your body to completely rid yourself of the excess air and inflammation caused by the surgery. This air is what your body intakes during the surgery and can leave you very bloated with discomfort for a while-also contributing to that excessive bulge/mommy tummy. Save yourself the headaches or annoying future wardrobe styles by taking advantage (if you can) for the forty-five day house arrest 4)you're body and system gets acclimated to its new sense regarding your baby in addition to the sleeping habits 5)these forty-five days allows mommy to also concentrate on herself mentally and physically because of how hard our bodies are working for the baby, especially for the breast milk creation. The extra bouts of rest and relaxing in your own oasis you create inside your home will do wonders for you moms...

Needless to say, as much as I was annoyed with the house arrest for forty-five days post-delivery of daughter number one I was an avid participant for the second daughter. I took advantage of all the benefits of the house arrest the second time around. That's why I've loved my body no matter what post deliveries. You should too...

Sincerely,
A Distinct Woman

COVID Tendencies - Health/General

The month of September is almost over and it's amazing to see the statistics of the COVID numbers. The social media and news aren't covering the health/COVID aspect anymore, it seems there are other fishes to fry and take notice of (politics, the Royal Family, President Biden, former President Trump and scandals, etc). However, if anyone actually would take the time to look they would see that COVID isn't gone and that it's still a current concern that people should still take precautions with.

Yes I know we aren't seeing the death tolls high or seeing a drastic infection count from how contagious the interactions from an infected person is, thanks to the vaccinations and booster shots that were released. That doesn't mean though that the worst is over or that things can't revert back to a fearful time again. People aren't as conscientious anymore to using even hand sanitizer or wipes anymore. In case you're wondering I stated "even hand sanitizer" because I had already observed prior to COVID, how disgusting the women in today's world are; its awful to witness and know first hand how many even use the restroom but leave not even having washed their hands. So thinking how unconcerned the women are with their own hygiene, of course I can conclude or react in not trusting the world to be cautious in being COVID free. What makes me think that someone who could easily wash their hands for twenty seconds actually take care to not spread or be a host to a disease that has the ability to "cripple" (I use that term loosely) someone once they are diagnosed with COVID.

Do I believe that the vaccinations and boosters have helped, yes of course, but that still doesn't rule out the responsibility that every citizen has in securing that COVID doesn't have another ugly outbreak as it did when the strand was first released...I have all my vaccinations and even my boosters thus far. Have you? Or are you one of those people who think that you and/or your family shouldn't be vaccinated at all? Either way, as wonderful as it is to have life back into some normalcy, it doesn't mean we throw complete caution to the wind. For example what I noticed was that many people began to travel for pleasure and leisure there was a spike in COVID numbers, then when the school year formerly commenced again another spike; with the lower counts registered as well with similar circumstances justifying the numbers. But don't take my word for it, take a look for yourself: covid numbers in texas

I mean I've had COVID once already pretty badly (along with the residual symptoms that stayed with me for almost two years) and even though they say it's not likely you'll get as sick the second time around if you should catch it again...well needless to say I don't believe in that. Yes, your body has a chance to create antibodies after it's first battle with COVID but that doesn't mean that your body is always running at the same capacity or level of nutrients. Therefore, for example, my family and I will enjoy eating out (at restaurants) yet because of everyone's level in comfort from COVID we've been able to notice a decline in how thoroughly tables are cleaned; hence, why in turn we are still carrying our cleaning wipes and disinfecting our table where we sit at least. I have little ones and still make them wear their masks when entering into public restrooms and my family and I still wear masks when there are large groups or bodies of people in the same area that we will be in. What works in our favor to not always have to wear masks, is that we've managed to develop a routine to the establishments we frequent, that we know when there aren't so many people there.

Do you have any special routines to help stay healthy or COVID free? I guess the moral of this post is!…can we at least still be courteous to those not wanting to have COVID and have some sense to hygiene!

Sincerely,

A Distinct Woman

DIY Folding Clothes - Family Life/General

Before I begin we need to have an understanding on a few things...I'm not not like you're typical coddling and "time out" ...
