Ophir Pass, CO - General/Recommend

So if you haven’t ready my “Silverton, CO” post yet, I suggest you start off with that one first before you go reading this one. This post was inspired as a spin off practically, after writing that other blog post. You’ll understand better once you read that other post…

Meanwhile back to what I’m trying to say-this particular route through the mountains is a faster method to get from Silverton to Telluride Mountain Village. When I mean faster I really do mean faster by the way-see the actual highway takes (if I remember correctly, since its been a while and I’ve slept since!)-about an additional two to three hours more, granted it a beautiful scenic drive BUT if you don’t get squeamish to heights and some serious “country road” style pathways, then you’ll want to take this route every time you want to enter into Silverton from the Telluride side (and and of those little cities in between).

The route itself is some serious elevation course and you better know how to handle your vehicle as well as narrow roadways-if this isn’t your niche or if you aren’t a confidant person or you get timid/scared easily-I DO NOT recommend this roadway adventure for you! You go up a steep slope driving away from Silverton and onto this path, it's not paved and it’s not even a dirt road, purely mountain rock AND mountain boulders in your sights the entire time. The path is so narrow in some area that you better keep an eye of for oncoming traffic and find that little patch of wide path to allow for both vehicles to pass each other, otherwise you’re going to have a nice tumble down the slope just just a few cars below did before you-and yes they are still down there with the battle scars of a good tumble down! Honestly, though slightly dangerous for beginner trailhead drivers, it truly is a spectacular drive and one breathtaking view no matter the direction you start in (meaning going towards Silverton in this path or driving away from Silverton).

So now that you know this path isn’t for the faint of heart, make sure you have some balls or a backbone of steel and you’ll be J-U-S-T fine ;)

Silverton, CO - General/Recommend

When you’re looking for adventure, history, and a small town authentic feel then you need to make your way to Silverton, Colorado! I mean visiting Colorado in general is a must, so if you haven’t managed to make your way there (whether driving or flying because both are worth it) then ahem! You really need to put that on your to do list or bucket list or whatever method you have in order to try new things!

Not only is it a quaint little town filled with history, but near by are some great historical markers that you wouldn’t believe until you see for yourself…towards the top of a ridge, on the Southend outskirts of town, are some of the old coal mine spots in addition to some water treatment job sites. Then there’s a trailhead you can take on your 4x4 vehicles or on the ATV’s that you can rent in town. Then the town itself is historical in the age of some of the buildings and also for the fact that they have one of the oldest and still full functional, coal running/engine train! It’s gorgeous and the way it sounds! It’s fascinating to watch how it works, hearing the sounds of an old fashioned train, and the little station where it ends is pretty quirky and unique (well in comparison to some of the newer or more modernized train stops/stations anyway.

Everyone in town is super friendly and welcoming, whether you're a tourist visiting or one of the locals making their pit stop of the day.

The ATV rental is in a pretty old looking building at the entrance of the city, there you can park your car securely while exploring the town or you can enjoy the trailheads and various country roads that intersect the town. Just a heads up there’s literally only one way in and out of the town if you’re wanting to use the main highway/paved road. When I mean country roads I literally mean country roads and NOT like anything you find on the east coast towns or even in Texas, where country roads mean  rock/pebble or dirt roads. No country roads in Colorado are more like the “passes” that go through mountains and mountain ridges, you’ll see once you get there but I’ve posted some of the pictures on here of what you’ll find. Some breathtaking gorgeous where others are the “Scary pretty” landscapes. Regardless, nothing in this area will disappoint.

In the middle of town there’s a “diner” of some kind that’s been on the Diners, Drive In’s, and Dives and its pretty good. I dont know what the hype was really all about BUT I know that there was so many people ordering the biscuits and gravy and something else I can’t remember for the life of me, as I write this. When you park or walk to the restaurant you’ll notice the storefront first and then you have to continue to walk back to really see the seating area for the diner. It’s decorated in lots of woods and with a log cabin rustic feel to it. The staff seem to always know everyone that walk in.

The trails that being at the north side of town, that takes you on a winding dirt and rock road up the ridge of some mountainside, only to find at the top the unexpected surprise of another elevation level landscape. What do I mean you may ask, well if you take a look at some of my photos then you’ll notice that you dont even feel like you’re on top of some mountain ridge but basically on another plane, where there’s lush green pastures and more surrounding mountaintops, then the further on the trail you go you’ll find a beautiful natural lake/pond. I highly suggest that you consistently keep an eye on the weather conditions should you take an ATV and not a 4x4 vehicle with heat/AC, because my goodness that dramatic drop in temperatures is significant and could easily get cold - well during the month of August anyway.

The town itself isn’t too far from Durango and Telluride, so I personally would recommend staying at one of those locations and making a day or couple days worth adventure so you can really soak up what this, though small, town has to offer because it definitely has lots! So where it’s say you’ve been, or to enjoy the scenery or to just simply go on an off road adventure - maybe even take a hike or two-this is definitely a place to go….even frequent for some peace and quiet with a taste of adventure!

Oh and if you’re wondering who the man is in the picture and how I even came across this little gem of a city-thats thanks to the recommendation of my ex-husband…hey I don’t care, I’ll admit he was awesome for adventures and new how to plan them too…

KidKraft Wooden Bookcase - Amazon Product Review

KidKraft Wooden Bookcase Reading Nook

If you're wanting something that's both functional AND accommodating for your space this is the item for you. My oldest was always big on getting into the crook of a couch and settling in for her coloring or her "reading". Purchased in 2018 and it lasted us up until 2020 where it was finally put to retire.

When I had purchased it, it was the gray and white finish for a clean look and easier clean up. So, when you click on the link above, you'll notice that it doesn't seem to have the one I ordered in stock anymore but I'm sure you can easily find one on Amazon regardless. The cushion was attached well to the product and though my kids were never obnoxious or rowdy with their furniture pieces, it handled an adult sitting on it just fine AND the continued use of not one but two children on it. I personally used the shelves for books as well as for their toys and then I would alternate out with little cubbies or just as you see in the picture.

I've had it in their toys room, as a nice little corridor reading book for them, and it's been moved around a lot. Well worth the buy, material, and easy install/setup.

White Oak Lavender VA - General/Family/Recommend

I know I've written before about the beautiful landscapes in the Virginia state area but believe me when I say, that you just won't get enough...This particular place I'm writing about is on the nice open lands of the Harrisonburg area and it doesn't disappoint.

The White Oak Lavender is definitely not your typical vineyard, but I think probably quainter and more enchanting overall. As you're driving there, be careful because you could miss the entrance! It is both a vineyard, lavender filled land, and a quaint little farmhouse. The little shop has some creative and delicious items for you while you're perusing and of course the wine tasting. Honestly, though not one I would claim to be a favorite on the vineyard list, it's a favorite for a family outing to enjoy the peace, quiet, and open nature feel with just a hint of livestock (without the horrible smell) and the lovely breeze caressing your face and carrying that natural lavender scent around you.

The owner is both humble and a conversationalist :) So whether you intended to put this on your places to visit or not, its well worth the stop regardless of your plan for the day...

Family Dogs and Kid/s - General/Family

Now before you go and start reading, just remember all my posts are my opinions and views NOT professional expertise or a guarantee; also if you easily get offended easily-though I appreciate your time but then this blog post and my blog alone isn't for you! Happy Reading!

I've always been a dog lover and it took me long enough to finally get my dogs when I was growing up, but that's another post for another day, anyway! So I've always been a dog person (and yes that means I don't believe that cats are pets nor are they my favorite-hate cats actually) and in turn like any child would growing up, had my ideology and ideas regarding when I would have my very own dog right. See my family (on both my mom and dad's sides) have had dogs before but not necessarily with the same vision I had in mind. My father had a line of German Shepherds used more for guard dogs and my father had a huge role in training the dogs he had in his household; needless to say that his dogs were to serve one purpose and one purpose only and it didn't involve companionship! My mother's side of the family had plenty of dogs as well, different breeds but also outside of my personally ideology for a pet thats a dog; outdoor only dogs but family friends. Hearing some of the family stories involving my uncles and aunts and their dogs though always brings smiles to my face and makes me realize that I think as a child that the ideology I want/wanted for my pets was just something natural. Although, I think my uncles really enjoyed their pets as more than just outdoor dogs but friendly companions to play with and "venture" with considering some of the mischief they got into.

So where does that leave me you might say?...I loved my dogs and I love the dog breed period (specific ones that is-I'm sorry a small rat dog/purse dog just isn't a dog!) I believe in the compromising training of building both an indoor and outdoor dog to serve as not only a familial companion but to also serve as an intuitive protector as well as a playful addition to the family! I will say though that though I feel connected to my dog and love them dearly/fondly! That does NOT mean that I'm the type of owner who will let them sleep in my bed with me, nor in my kids beds, and most definitely NOT on any of my furniture in the house-shoot not even my patio furniture! I'm happy to spend money on the most comfortable piece of furniture for THEM but sure as hell not getting on the human furniture! Nothing against anyone who is like that or feels that they want to, I just personally can not nor will not allow it for any of my dogs and I sure as hell won't be with something who allows/does that. The way I won't date a smoker is the same way I feel to NOT date someone that allows their dog into their bed-sorry I've already dealt with the uncomfortable experience of dog hair in places that SHOULD not have dog hair-think of beach sand and you'll get my drift! :p anyway! So to each their own, just not my cup of tea :) Moving on!

My first dog was home since he was a pup so I was able to start him off with my cousins in mind which thankfully gave me some insight to any future pets I would have. With him being a pup, it was easier to train him from the get go for sure, for the things that we needed/wanted. I say "we" because my parents were adamant that he was NOT to be an indoor dog so I worked around certain things and training was a blend. Crate training, potty training, tricks, etc. Two things I'll specifically expand on for the intent of this post will be about feeding times and family. Since my cousins were SO young and my grandparents were getting older I needed to make sure that he wasn't going to jump up on them or especially in greeting (there was already three family members skittish of dogs, so I had to keep it under wraps). So that was easy and fun but constant practice and consistency was key for sure. Then specifically during feeding I wanted to make sure that my dog wasn't going to ever get or be aggressive, that he knew who the alpha was in the household regardless of the direction or circumstance and aggression or possessiveness during feeding was NEVER going to occur on my watch. I would get into the habit for the first month and a half to basically bug him, irritate him, and annoy him during the feeding time. I knew that my cousins weren't obnoxiously annoying like other kids their ages so their demeanor towards the dog would be respectful not to provoke him, yet to be cautious and protect all involved during those moments, I made sure that my dog would eat well regardless of anyone petting him, touching him, pulling gently or hard on his ears or tail, perhaps even maybe sticking their fingers in the bowl or even stroking or messing with his head. This one really paid off because it was a movement and action I followed through with my other two dogs...I also knew that if I ever had kids it would be something similar for them too...

My second dog was really more of a find by my mom that surprised us all (but thats a story for another day) but of course him and my first dog bonded like if they were truly brothers from the same litter AND amazingly enough provided a level of complimentary character and personality that we didn't realize we even needed! He was just as easy to train even though he seemed to be a stray and after a blood exam seem to be close in age to my first dog (by only a few months). Therefore training for him was similar but NOT the same because his personality was definitely different and a lot less stubborn than my first dog. Where I struggled to teach "lay" to my first dog, the second dog easily accepted commands. Where I taught "shake" to my first dog, the second didn't same to care for it. Little things like that was what soon became intriguing to me in addition to also being a hassle-however in the end it all worked out...my second dog was by far not an issue around my cousins in their young age nor towards my grandparents.

Then my third dog came along who I found wandering the streets, dropped her off at the Plano Animal Shelter...only to have bonded with her so much in that pickup that I couldn't get her out of my head nor heart. SO, my third dog here I go! Her story plays a big role for me on my life journey but again thats another post! Needless to say, I was able to convince my folks and my female companion arrived! She was about a year and a half when I adopted her and with no knowledge of her past I remember being a little uncertain and fearful of how things would turn out, especially with introductions to my boys. I think a blessing in disguise was that I took her home after her neutering so she had to stay inside with me :) I fast noticed and saw that though found and no background on her, my gut told me she was going to be a good addition and a solid one...I took advantage of her post surgery time to create that "alpha bond" setting home boundaries in addition to some quick training exercises of her knowing where she should lay or what would be her "space" when inside the house (because yes I was going to fight to have her inside with me-I felt something with her that I was going to need, whether I knew what - until later), sit, stay, and having her at attention. Where the boys had only two accidents post their arrival and infrequently allowed to go through the house, my girl dog had four...although it was a different house (WAY bigger) and also with only wood floors and tile with carpet on the stairs, I honestly think it was just the adjustment period for her, with her being older and getting to know her new home. Post those four incidents she never had issues and after house training her, she was solid in letting us know when she had to pee (along with the boys actually in this new house). She was smart and one hell of a fast learner-her demeanor was all about pleasing her owner with the task completed, even if it was just to snuggle. Now that she differed in, she was a huge furry companion who loved knowing that she felt your physical touch and you were nearby or with her. Thankfully, never allowed her to submit to separation anxiety, instead nurtured the bond and it helped so much for what life brought in store for me later...

Cue when I meet my ex-husband and his dog, a big ass super sweet but powerful hunting dog...Though his place wasn't the cleanest, his dog was super clean and I as impressed with her demeanor as a whole. I took a liking to her and she seemed to take a liking to me, later sometimes even better than with him. She was a female and I think her and I truly bonded on another caliber when I got pregnant. That's for alter though...actually I give my ex-husband kudos to how he trained and raised his dog because she was awesome! Though I felt sad for her and bad for her, knowing that he didn't really even care for her enough to actually be what she needed, she was still always a great dog! For example, my family never did or trained for the off leash command or task with their dogs and as a little girl growing up with the dog movies that I did, I knew that I always wanted that for my and my dog; however, that was nixed because of how my family always "feared" the dogs getting away, or running away, or being ruined over, or then going with anyone, etc and etc. Needless to say it was fearful transference that had me never fulfilling that with my boys and I know that's on me, but they were awesome on leash and I knew that anyone in the family wouldn't have issues with them outside of the house on leash. So on one date with my ex-husband we decided to do a meet and greet with our dogs. Never having had any experience with training off leash, I was both excited and not going to lie, a tad bit scared, when my ex-husband on the date suggested doing a quick training session for off leash. I know for a fact it was his calm and alpha male demeanor that had my calming down and feeling confidant with my dog. She took to it like a charm and from that moment on, she never strayed from my side without my consent and always came back to...my dogs ability off leash enhanced further when I was pregnant.

So between my ex-husband's dog and my three at that time, I was pregnant with my oldest and sharing my prego scent with four dogs total. My first dog didn't seem to care, my second dog was still as loving and instinctually protective as always, my girl dog was more than I could ever hope for an imagine and THEN some during and post pregnancy, while the adopted fourth soon became another protective and unknowingly loving companion for me...my ex-husbands dog had been a mom too before so that probably helped in our bonding altogether.

Fast forward to when my oldest was born and I was more than overjoyed and pleased with how the dogs were but especially the female dogs...I will say though that unlike the rest of the world and having had even my dogs for so long, would I EVER leave a baby or child (I'm talking about under the age of twelve, or shoot maybe even younger than freshman year aged kids) ALONE with a dog. I don't care if I raised the litter from which my dog/s came from! Dogs are still animals even the best of "family breeds"-theres no way I'm still going to leave my child unattended with my dog. I considered my ex-husbands dog mine (shoot considering how much better I treated her and cared for her while he was away) and she gravitated towards me and my babygirl without a hitch especially if he was around.

My ex-husbands dog had a soft spot for my oldest and was always attentive to her movements and noise, where my female dog was attentive, observant, and in tune with my oldest daughter like on crack! She was doing things that I never trained or even fathomed for a dog to do and I was always warm and fuzzy seeing her in action and I always trusted her instincts.

Just because you have kids doesn't mean that your pets are forgotten, just because you have pets doesn't mean that you can't combine both the lives of your pets with your kids, and more importantly blending your mommy doggy side with the actual mom side is easy as long as you mentally prepare and have a vision in mind!...OK that's only half a load of crap! :) In all honestly, whether you have pets before kids or post kids, make sure you do have in mind a game-plan for how you want your household to run because its not fair to the animals and sure as hell ain't fair to your kids should you decide to get pulled more onto taking are of your dog more than your kids! Do right by both sets of "kids" to make sure there's a solid integration in place so that no one feels disconnected.

A Distinct Woman

Shower Caddy Organizers - Amazon Product Review

Amazon - Shower Caddy Organizers

The new home I moved into apparently didn't believe in creating shelves or at least one shelf for the shower wall, so there I go searching for a good product.

I literally went to TJ Max, Ross, Wal-Mart, Target, and Homegoods...do you know what I found? NOTHING! Ok well maybe not nothing but definitely not the right products for the intended use I needed anyway. All stores had some "suction" shelves but in my experience even over time those either start sliding down the walls/glass or they just don't retain the same amount of suction needed for what it holds. Then they all had some nice floor shelf options-but personally, something about dirt/germs you're washing off and swirling around at the bottom and the shelf legs not moving - yea not for me. I know weird but there's my reasoning, so I moved on. Then I thought I had it down perfectly at Homegoods with this bamboo (4) tier shelf that was basically "floating", where you had this spring rod that holds the shelf placed in the kiddie corner of the shower, similar to the pic below. (Also, not my pic, took it from googling exactly what I typed.)

But even having the right dimensions, the spring was so damn hard for me to, by myself, be able to install and fix the damn thing into the shower stall! Then it was missing pieces so there I go to return, receive store credit and buy something else that I wanted :)

Why, you ask, didn't I just go immediately on Amazon to purchase something like i do with all my other things? Well good question and honestly, I have no idea-I probably thought that the department stores would have something easy enough for me to buy and use. So finally did some looking round and boy am I more than pleased with the purchase!

For starters the size of the organizers is awesome! The quantity that they provide is also awesome! Then there's the adhesive strips they provide and the overall weight capacity for each of the shelves-which I might add is legit! So, I'm writing this post having already had this product for a little over a month now and still super impressed and overall, more than satisfied with the purchase, as you can see from my pics below :)

I do highly suggest the following for when you are putting it into your shower wall/glass:

  1. instructions don't say this but, make sure that your shower wall isn't wet and that your bathroom isn't humid - this does play a part on adhesives no matter how "tough" they are
  2. instructions don't say this but i feel it helped to "cure" the adhesive better to the wall-put in at least a good 4-5 hours between when you put the adhesive and when your next shower will be
  3. make sure to wipe and clean the surface where your adhesives are going
  4. place the adhesive and then thoroughly press down where you almost see the adhesive from a "see through like" color to now matching the wall color without any bubbles
  5. I used my nail to push down on the adhesive in rows
  6. then place the shelves on their adhesive hooks
  7. place all your intended items on the shelves
  8. leave as so and let adhesive work its magic
  9. you wont have to worry about anything regarding the adhesive and shelves for your next shower if you allowed enough time between

Earl’s - Restaurant Review

If you're looking for a hot spot with a great atmosphere, smooth interior designs for comfort and relaxation, excellent wait staff, deliciously awesome food from appetizers to the desserts, with a great setup of a bar/lounge and desirable drinks...well you'll find all of that and then some at Earls!

The first time in attendance it was just my sister and I on a Friday night and even with the reservations we had the bar area was a buzz of being busy and the restaurant was being filled at every table. The second time in attendance was with my parents and kiddos, then the more recent attendance was for my birthday...and guess what?! The great vibes, delicious food, and awesome drinks/desserts were still as consistent and as wonderful as the first experience/time...

To have the full experience you really need to order the following: their fish tacos, street corn and avocado dip, Seafood Platter or Seafood Tower (believe me these two alone could be a meal for a couple if you wanted to and love seafood), Ahi Tuna Tataki, Classic burger or even the Kids Burger, Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl, Truffle Tortellini, Key Lime Pie, and their White Chocolate Cream Brûlée. I don’t have pictures for all I’ve listed that I’ve had? BUT I do have them of my favs…

Their Seafood Platter is smaller in portion but just as wonderful. The best part of both the platter and tower is the heartiness of the seafood that for a normal person (meaning someone other than me) it works great as practically a meal to share between a couple or just between two people. We like to order the tower because of the portions and quantity for all.

As I mentioned before, there’s nothing really on the menu that will disappoint and the chef/kitchen consistency is spot on! As for their desserts, whether it’s something tangy or chocolate and decadent or just a mix of a nice creamy sweet flavor - you’ll also be satisifed.

Whether it's for a ladies night out, a chill date or even an intimate date, or even for a family night out-you really can't go wrong with this destination! Granted my kids though young, are not like most kids their age for their palette and mannerisms, so thought the restaurant was awesome with my kids, I did get to observe their treatment of other "family" tables and they were pretty good-so all in all I would say that they are a family friendly environment for the most part...

So after a few times being at their location, I went to look into the restaurants website and I found that they are primarily housed in Canada-so THANK YOU Canada for sharing this deliciousness with our states because my goodness I continue to love to eat here! Look for yourself ;)

Sincerely,

DIY Folding Clothes - Family Life/General

Before I begin we need to have an understanding on a few things...I'm not not like you're typical coddling and "time out" ...
